Northern Energy Capital (NEC) was honoured to take part in the 2023 NunatuKavut Energy Forum, hosted in-person in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL. The 3-day event was organized by the NunatuKavut Community Council's Department of Research, Education, and Culture in partnership with Nunacor Development Corporation.

NEC's Malek Tawashy was one of many project leaders from across Canada invited to present at this forum, with the goal of enhancing education and awareness within the renewable sector for the benefit of NunatuKavut Inuit and communities.

Malek took the opportunity to showcase our numerous renewable energy initiatives with Kivalliq Alternative Energy (KAE), including the Solar Energy and Battery Storage Projects in Naujaat and Coral Harbour, NU, and the wind resource assessment and capacity building project in Baker Lake, NU.

KAE is an Inuit-led partnership between NEC and Sakku Investments Corporation, which is the development corporation for the Kivalliq Inuit Association. KAE is leading the clean energy transformation in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut by developing clean energy sources aimed at increasing energy security, economic independence, and growing local capacity for Inuit communities in the region.

As an added benefit, delegates of the 2023 NunatuKavut Energy Forum were treated to a day of cultural activities organized by the NunatuKavut Community Council, including dog-sledding, snowshoeing, boil ups, and storytelling. These experiences were more than just activities; they were a vivid reminder of the rich heritage we are working to protect through sustainable energy practices.
