The community of Rankin Inlet celebrates the completion of a milestone.

Northern Energy Capital Inc. is pleased to announce the completion of a state-of-the-art meteorological tower located near Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. “Today’s milestone marks the culmination of efforts made by many stakeholders spanning the public, private, and non-profit sectors over the last several years” says Malek Tawashy, President of Northern Energy Capital.

The tower is located 4km outside of Rankin Inlet, on Municipal Land within the traditional region of the Kivalliq Inuit. Standing 50 meters tall, the tower will collect wind and solar data for the next 12 months. After this time, a proposal could follow to develop wind power. “The data collected by the met tower will be used in the study currently being undertaken to assess the feasibility for utility-scale wind power in Rankin Inlet” says Tawashy.

The harsh climate of Nunavut is of course a challenge that will not be overlooked should a project proceed. “Unlike past projects in the region, only those wind turbines that are specifically engineered for these climates will be considered” Tawashy confirmed.

The project is being designed to fit within the Territory’s Independent Power Production Policy (IPP Policy) scheduled to be implemented by the Government of Nunavut this fiscal year.
